JOB POSTING: Assistant Teacher

OVERVIEW:
Under the direction of the Group Teacher, the Assistant Teacher will be responsible for assisting the UPK Teacher in planning a holistic approach in cultivating milestones by improving each child’s cognitive, emotional, physical and social development, in a healthy and safe learning environment. S/he will also be responsible for conducting objective observations in a various settings, such as classrooms, play spaces, and field excursions and provides feedback to parents and/or guardians on children’s progress. S/he will ensure that children are engaging in activities that promotes intellectual curiosity and socialization.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist the Head each in designing and developing age appropriate lesson plans that promotes school readiness

  • Assist Head Teacher by ensuring that children’s spaces are safe and fosters emotional growth

  • Assist Head Teacher by ensuring that classroom is prepared and is engaging for healthy exploration and learning

  • Assist in maintaining accurate student records

  • Assist in conducting assessment and evaluation for each child

  • Assist Head Teacher in promoting and encouraging parental involvement in children’s development

  • Develop positive rapport with parents

  • Respect and maintain confidential information about parents and children.

  • Assist in maintaining a clean classroom environment

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:

  • Must attend required In-house Professional Development

  • Maintain certification and/or required proof of attendance to matriculating programs

  • Adhere to all state and city mandated requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • The Assistant Teacher must have qualifications that meet NYC Department of Health mandates under Article 47 Regulations

  • Strong knowledge of childhood development

  • Experience in working with toddlers in Early Learn and/or Head Start Programs

  • In-depth knowledge of classroom management

  • Ability to communicate proficiently both written and verbally

  • Bilingual, Spanish a plus

CREDENTIALS:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent TASC or GED

  • Nine (9) college credits in early childhood education

  • Two (2) years’ experience caring for children or

  • All the above and five (5) years of supervised experience in a permitted child care program

  • Associate Degree in Childhood Development, strongly preferred
